The Slave Narrative Collection, a group of autobiographical accounts of freedmen, is one of the most important and noteworthy achievements of the WPA, Compiled in seventeen states during the years 1936-38, the collection consists of more than two thousand interviews with former slaves, most of them first-person accounts of slave life and the respondents’ own reactions to bondage.

We are partnering with Robindale Recording Studio to bring the voices of enslaved people to life.  We will be updating this site as more videos are produced.   These videos can be used as educational tools to bring the stories of these courageous individuals to life.  Their experiences must never be forgotten.  If you are interested in submitting your recordings, please email us at info@sdusmp.org.
