A Mulatto Slave

This story is an introduction to young teens about families during slavery in America. It is written in the style of the Writer’s Federal Project (WPA) of the 1930’s, when African American former slaves were interviewed. Peter Hunt was Mulatto, born of a slave owner and his slave, named America. Ironically, they were enslaved on a plantation in a town named Liberty. Peter Hunt’s life is examined from oral family history, and historical documents of the political, cultural, and economic times during slavery in American history. After their Emancipation by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863, Peter Hunt enlisted in the newly formed United States Colored Troops (Usct), for the Union Army during the Civil War. This story of Peter Hunt is a “must read” for teens, so that they may understand that life isn’t always what it appears to be.
