Willoughby McWhite was born in 1812 and was of African descent. At the age of 17, she was documented as being enslaved along with her husband, Essex McWhite. She was sold at the Charleston Slave Mart in 1829 for $325.00 by Asa Brown to Stephen McWhite. She had four children, Essex, Caroline, Lydia, and Andrew. After the Civil War, she and Essex purchased 160 acres of the land that they were formerly enslaved on. In 2012 research was done by the PBS Show, The History Detectives.
